Why Fiction Still Matters (and Always Will)

There’s something quietly powerful about opening a work of fiction.

You might be sitting in your favorite chair, sipping coffee (I know I will be.), or maybe stealing a few minutes before bed—but the moment you turn that first page, you’re no longer where you started. You’ve stepped into another life, another place, another possibility.

That’s the magic of fiction.

Fiction invites us to walk in someone else’s shoes without ever leaving home. It lets us explore faraway places, unravel mysteries, fall in love, face heartbreak, and experience hope. We can do all of this within the safety of a story. Sometimes we choose books that mirror our own lives, and other times we choose ones that are wildly different. Either way, fiction has a way of meeting us exactly where we are.

At A Novel Twist, fiction is at the heart of what I do. From cozy mysteries and sweeping romances to suspenseful page-turners, stories help connect us. They spark conversations at book club, inspire laughter over shared plot twists, and sometimes even offer comfort when real life feels heavy.

And here’s the beautiful thing: there’s no “right” way to read fiction.

You don’t have to analyze every chapter or remember every character’s name. You can read slowly, devour a book in one sitting, or abandon a story that doesn’t grab you (Yep, you can DNF a book. I know, right?) Fiction is meant to be enjoyed, not assigned. Let me say that again: Fiction is meant to be enjoyed, not assigned.

So whether you’re discovering a new author, revisiting an old favorite, or taking a chance on a book you wouldn’t normally choose… that choice matters. Each story you pick up adds a little more imagination, empathy, and joy to your life.

I am so grateful to be part of your reading journey, one story at a time. After all, you never know when the next book might surprise you with…a novel twist.

Happy reading,
Keith
