Book Review: The Housemaid by Freida McFadden

The Housemaid by Freida McFadden is certainly a twisted ride, and true to form, it kept me guessing right up until the end. While the final reveal wasn’t a complete shock to me, it was just surprising enough to make me pause and think back through everything I’d read.

I picked this one up for “Stories & Spirits Book Club,” and honestly, it’s not a book I would have chosen on my own. Psychological thrillers aren’t usually at the top of my reading list. That said, this was one of those moments when stepping outside my usual comfort zone paid off because I found it interesting to read.

Though the plot takes some dark and unsettling turns, I appreciated how readable and fast-paced the writing was. I also appreciated that she didn’t get to far into the blood and gore, instead, focusing on the plot and the personal interactions. McFadden does a solid job of pulling the reader along.

While The Housemaid may not have converted me fully to the genre, I can absolutely see why it’s a popular choice for book clubs and those who love to read suspense. I’m sure it will spark good conversation among club members and I can’t wait to hear the thoughts of others.

I will conclude this review by saying that McFadden did a great job of allowing it to be a stand-alone for folks like me, and yet, also teasing the genre lover to grab the next one in the series.

⭐I give it 4.5 Stars.
